About the project
A visual immersion into the popular culture of Santa Catarina Island, in Brazil.
The project brings together ten images that capture the ancestry and resilience of local traditions, offering the public a visually engaging experience. Each portrait highlights the strength of cultural expressions that endure over time. Iconic figures such as Mestre Nado Gonçalves, guardian of the Boi de Mamão folklore, as well as artisans, fishermen, and devotees who keep the islands popular culture alive, are honored through the project.
The aesthetic approach moves between the real and the constructed, exploring carefully planned lighting that departs from naturalism and carries influences from painting and cinema. In these portraits, light not only reveals but also guides the viewer’s gaze, emphasizing essential elements of the scene and creating a pictorial atmosphere.
This project was selected through the Paulo Gustavo Law Public Call LPG SC 2023 and was carried out with funding from the Brazilian Federal Government and the Paulo Gustavo Emergency Cultural Law, through the Santa Catarina Cultural Foundation.
